In ancient Greece, people deemed undesirable were branded with marks called STIGMA to differentiate them and warn the public to stay away from them. Being rejected as an outcast creates an excruciating form of social pain. Interestingly, neuroscience shows that social pain shares the same neural pathways as physical pain (social pain/physical pain overlap theory.) Stigmatizing individuals or groups can result in self-stigma when people start to believe in their own unworthiness. This results in the stigma becoming integrated into a person\'s identity, damage to self-efficacy & self-esteem, hesitancy to seek help for mental or physical issues, impairment of social relationships, reduced sense of life meaning, and increases in structural and systemic inequalities - to name a few. To be/become STIGMATIZED arouses the separation & distress circuitry in our brains, often creating panic, extreme loneliness, grief and terror of future social exclusion. If I could be everyone\'s mom for a minute, I would remind you to please be kind to everyone, even if they are different, made a mistake, or live differently. Would you consider sharing your chocolate milk and inviting them to play once in a while. Who can you help destigmatize today by showing them you accept them for who they are? It\'s a great place to start.

Put this is your psychological toolkit for when you are having a bad day. Share your tools with your friends. Sharing coffee & chocolate helps too, if you ask me. Tell me your story of how helping someone else helped YOU.

The other night I was feeling confused & hurt by someone saying absolutely false, delusional & unkind things about me as retribution for not doing what she wanted. It kind of triggered me, reactivating the fear of humiliation in my memory networks. Even though I have a relatively strong humiliation muscle now, I still got a little nauseated for a minute. I decided to do a \"loving kindness mediation\" directed at this young lady, and my concerns melted away as my compassion for her grew. I seriously felt the stress leave my body & the nausea subside. I think there is a lot of wisdom in \"doing good to your enemies\" (or even imagining them in kind ways.) Have you tried this?

Beautiful #shortcreek - the town that is misrepresented in the media nonstop. In the news right now there is a LOT of sensational new bullshit. I see the never-ending stigmatization of an already marginalized and traumatized community. This is not to minimize the true stories of trauma, which I honor with all my heart. But I am not happy with the media\'s lack of balance, due diligence and fact checking. Multiple times I have been told by people who moved away that they are afraid to say where they are from because of the way this town is repeatedly painted as a town of horrors. (And I used to believe it all, as portrayed, and for that I am sorry!) I have a lot more to say about this one of these days. It is a very sensitive topic. Media ethics matter because lives are impacted. Nuances and complexities should be addressed a lot more fully, in my opinion.

I found a vintage candy store in St. George, yay! What did you love when you were little? (Vintage humans only). For me, it was Malo Cups at the Croton Skating Rink.

The greater the (perceived) audience who witnessed or participated in your humiliation or public shaming, the more intense the anguish. It can feel unbearable. But here\'s the good news. It is human nature to think that the whole world has witnessed our humiliation/misrepresentation, and that everyone in the world believes it and wants to discard us. But it\'s not true. It feels true, it does. But some people will see through the misrepresentations and the unfairness, and side with you. And there are people (some who have even been through similar things) standing by waiting to offer acceptance and support and community.

I am one of those people. You are not alone. ❤️
